  3. The car rides on
  4. four air-filled,
  5. rubberized tires. 
  6. The tires have
  7. several different
  8. functions.

  10. The first is to
  11. create traction,
  12. this is done
  13. through the tread,
  14. which is the
  15. pattern and depth
  16. of the grooves that
  17. are molded into the
  18. tire.  The tread
  19. can vary quite
  20. significantly,
  21. depending on the
  22. kind of tire you
  23. have, which in turn
  24. depends on the kind
  25. of vehicle and the
  26. kind of driving you
  27. do.

  29. The second is to
  30. act as a cushion to
  31. bumps.  Since
  32. rubber is flexible,
  33. it absorbs most of
  34. the smaller bumps
  35. in the road, and
  36. also cushions
  37. against severe
  38. bumps.  If the car
  39. had solid tires,
  40. you would feel many
  41. more of the bumps,
  42. and there would be
  43. more wear and tear
  44. on the car from the
  45. increased number of
  46. bumps that gets
  47. transferred to the
  48. body of the car.
