- Tires
-
- The car rides on
- four air-filled,
- rubberized tires.
- The tires have
- several different
- functions.
-
- The first is to
- create traction,
- this is done
- through the tread,
- which is the
- pattern and depth
- of the grooves that
- are molded into the
- tire. The tread
- can vary quite
- significantly,
- depending on the
- kind of tire you
- have, which in turn
- depends on the kind
- of vehicle and the
- kind of driving you
- do.
-
- The second is to
- act as a cushion to
- bumps. Since
- rubber is flexible,
- it absorbs most of
- the smaller bumps
- in the road, and
- also cushions
- against severe
- bumps. If the car
- had solid tires,
- you would feel many
- more of the bumps,
- and there would be
- more wear and tear
- on the car from the
- increased number of
- bumps that gets
- transferred to the
- body of the car.
